We have divided the course into two parts. The first part is the main content, consisting of 63 video lessons that teach you how your engine works and how to perform the necessary maintenance to ensure it continues to function properly. The second part consists of bonus lessons, which are currently mostly text-based, and delve deeper into specific topics, such as troubleshooting common problems.
The Main Part of the Course
In the videos for the main part of the course, we guide you through the most important topics and maintenance procedures. These lessons cover all the essential knowledge needed for engine maintenance, along with some additional information. For some engines, there are special requirements or tips for performing certain tasks, which are detailed in the lecture notes found below the videos. Occasionally, you may also find bonus videos in the notes where topics are covered from a different angle or in more depth.
Importance of Lecture Notes
The lecture notes are the most up-to-date part of the course. If any corrections or additions to the video content are needed, these will be included in a box like this one at the beginning of the lecture notes. Since it may take us time to re-record videos with updated information, it’s a good idea to always check at least the beginning of the lecture notes for important updates.
Additionally, if your engine has special procedures or requirements, always refer to your engine manual to ensure you’re following the correct steps, as the course may not cover every specific detail for your particular engine.
Bonus Lessons
The bonus lessons in the second part of the course provide more in-depth information beyond standard engine maintenance. One particularly important chapter in the Engine Work bonus module is troubleshooting. As time goes on, more content and bonus videos will be added to this section, so it is worth revisiting these lessons periodically to stay updated.
Tips for Navigating Videos
The videos are designed to be clear and concise, but the pace may feel a bit fast, especially if English is not your first language. If you have difficulty keeping up, you can easily pause the video by pressing the spacebar and resume by pressing it again. The arrow keys can be used to rewind or fast-forward along the video timeline.
Comments Section
Below the lecture notes, there is a comment section where you can ask questions if anything is unclear. We will do our best to respond to comments within a few days. The comment section can also serve as a way to provide feedback that will help us improve future versions of the course.
Please keep in mind that Jan and Nigel do not have the time to provide individual consulting services. For specific questions related to your boat's systems, it's best to consult a local specialist.
We know that the line between clarifying course content and addressing specific issues with your boat may be blurry at times. Our goal is to ensure the course is helpful to all students. Therefore, don't hold back any questions that are related to your boat, but try to phrase them in a way that can benefit the entire community.
Before asking a question, please check the existing comments to see if someone else has already asked a similar question.
Over time, the comment section will grow and become a valuable resource for everyone, helping the entire BoatHowTo community to expand its knowledge.
question… is there a way to take any of the course content offline? I’m taking an 6 hour flight next week and would love to run through some of the courses while in flight, and not sure the wifi quality on the airline (or cost for that matter).
Hi Robert,
Unfortunately right now it is not possible to view the videos offline. For the lecture notes, you may be able to use your browser’s offline mode which lets you access sites that you have already accessed and that are stored in the browser cache (depends on your browser’s settings). Or you can print them out or save them as PDF, which may take a bit of time to do though…
Best
Jan
Ok… thank you for the quick reply. So far I’ve only covered a few courses and I like what I’m seeing. I know a lot of what’s being covered, but it’s giving me things I would have missed, and I know I’ll be picking up a lot to fill the gaps I have in my skills. Thanks for putting this together.
